Denise Austin To Be Featured In Radio Public Service Announcements For Idaho Potatoes

Potatoes

Big Idaho potato yields big publicity dividends

10/30/2012
By Vicky Boyd

The Big Idaho Potato Truck may be coming to a town near you. Or coming back to one.
As part of Idaho Potato Commission’s 75th anniversary celebration, a 70-foot-long semi truck and trailer carrying a 28-foot-long likeness of an Idaho russet potato began touring the country this year, said Frank Muir, commission president and chief executive officer.

The campaign has proved so successful that it will be repeated in 2013, running from about Memorial Day through Labor Day, he said.

“Our traveling tater team tells us that everybody in America wants to take a photo of them,” Muir said. “They feel like they’re celebrities out there.”

The tour has gone viral, with countless people sending the commission photos of themselves standing next to the giant russet, Muir said. Others have posted videos of the giant spud on YouTube.
Courtesy Idaho Potato CommissionThe Big Idaho Potato Truck rolled into the nation's capital earlier this year.

The truck and accompanying team have visited more than 100 cities in 31 states, generating more than 250 million media impressions.

“This is the most incredible PR event that I’ve ever been a part of,” Muir said.
Tied into the tour is a 30-second, tongue-in-cheek national TV commercial that features Idaho potato grower Mark Coombs wondering where his truck and giant potato disappeared to.

“If you see them, let them know, it’s time to come home,” Coombs laments in one of the ad spots.

Because the Eagle-based commission works with a relatively small advertising campaign, Muir said they like to leverage every opportunity they can.
In addition to the commission’s 75th anniversary logo, the trailer also features the Meals on Wheels and American Heart Association’s Heart Healthy logos.

The IPC is the only state potato group that has taken the steps to apply for and receive the Heart Healthy designation, he said.

The commission also has taken on Meals on Wheels as its charitable partner, donating $100,000 to the organization during 2012. Muir said the commission plans to make the same donation in 2013.
The truck made appearances at the Boise State University versus Brigham Young University football game Sept. 20 and at an Idaho State University football game this fall.

Both are considered marquee games, where the commission will be acknowledged as a primary sponsor and will have stadium signage.

The commission also is in its second of six years as being the title sponsor of the Famous Idaho Potato Bowl, Dec. 16, which pits a Western Athletic Conference football team against a Mid-American Conference Team.

Part of that sponsorship includes stadium signage.

Last year, the commission logged 2.5 million media impressions just from ESPN viewership of that game, Muir said.

Commission spokesperson and fitness guru Denise Austin won’t be seen in TV commercials this year because of the potato truck ads.

Instead, she will be featured in 30-second and 1-minute radio public service announcements that are expected to be heard by 25 million to 50 million listeners.

The commission also plans to beef up its social media presence with food bloggers, Facebook recipe contests, Twitter and a new Pinterest account.

“(Pinterest has) become a very high active social network, and for recipes, it’s perfect,” Muir said

The 2012 donations were significantly higher than last year’s total of $580,000 thanks to the record number of walkers, more than 8,500 people, and the many donations by local and national businesses, including presenting sponsor Nickelodeon.

Many education foundations that are in dire need of funding will also benefit from the money we’ve raised through this year’s walk.”

The 3.4 mile walk from the Manhattan Beach Pier to the Hermosa Beach Pier and back was hosted by fitness expert Denise Austin, who rallied the crowd before the walk. Legendary Hall of Fame baseball manager Tommy Lasorda also spoke about the importance of giving back to make a positive impact in the community, and Dancing with the Stars co-host Brooke Burke-Charvet congratulated SKECHERS and all the walkers for making a difference to help children with special needs and for supporting education foundations.

Skechers Holds Charity Pier Walk

Women's Wear Daily

October 29, 2012

Skechers USA Inc. went the extra mile for children with special needs when the company held its fourth annual Pier to Pier Friendship Walk on Oct. 28, in Manhattan Beach, Calif.

More than 8,500 participants made the 3.4-mile trip from Manhattan Beach Pier to Hermosa Beach Pier, and back. The event raised more than $750,000 for The Friendship Circle, a nonprofit group that helps children with special needs find mentoring and social programs.

“What that organization does is pairs children with special needs with volunteers from middle schools and high schools and they become lifelong friends,” said Skechers President Michael Greenberg. “Children with special needs, a lot of them lack friends. The student volunteers become their friends and they meet every single week. It’s a beautiful thing to see a child with special needs having buddies who bring so much joy and happiness to their lives.”

The event was co-hosted by Hall of Fame baseball manager Tommy Lasorda, “Dancing With the Stars” co-host Brooke Burke-Charvet, and fitness expert Denise Austin.

Sunday’s Skechers Friendship Walk will raise much-needed funds for PV schools

Local News

By Carrie Yamato, Special to the News
Thursday, October 25, 2012 2:09 PM PDT

With $3 million to raise this year, the Peninsula Education Foundation is counting on this weekend’s Skechers Pier to Pier Friendship Circle Walk to bring in significant dollars.

“This is probably one of the biggest checks we will get this year,” said PEF Executive Director Andrea Sala. “We’ve been involved in the walk since it started four years ago, and every year the amount we earn grows.”

Last year, more than 2,000 supporters participated in the 3.4-mile walk between Manhattan Beach Pier and Hermosa Beach Pier, and it brought it more than $88,000.

This year, team captain Sala hopes to get at least 3,000 walkers.

“We’ve always had the most walkers, so we’ve gotten the biggest check the last two years,” said Sala. “We want to win again!”

In addition to each walker’s $25 registration fee, PEF receives funds from the event based on the number of actual and virtual walkers it has on its team. The proceeds go directly to the school district to help maintain staff, small class sizes and special programs.

“We don’t know what the formula is [for distributing the funds], but if you do the math from last year, it’s a significant amount,” said Sala. “So if you can’t come out, be a virtual walker for us because we’ll get credit for that as well.”

While funds raised from the walk benefit education foundations in the South Bay from El Segundo to Palos Verdes including Torrance, the walk primarily secures money for the Friendship Circle, a South Bay nonprofit that brings social and recreational opportunities to special needs kids at schools and in the community. Regardless of what the education foundations earn, funds from the walk are specifically allocated to the Friendship Circle.

Danielle Lindgren, a junior at Palos Verdes High School and president of PVHS’s Friendship Circle, is hoping to increase proceeds by enlisting the help of walkers.

“I put posters around school, handed out brochures and just tried to share my story with people,” said Lindgren, who has been active with the Friendship Circle since she was in eighth grade.

Lindgren was even able to convince a few teachers to give students extra credit for walking.

“The teachers realize how important it is to raise money for our schools and the Friendship Circle program,” she said.

Lindgren is looking forward to hitting the Strand with some of her Friendship Circle friends.

“Last year, I walked with a couple of kids with special needs, and it was a lot of fun,” she said. “I don’t think of them as my friends with special needs. We just hang out and have fun. The little things that we take for granted excite them so much, and I love it.”

This year, celebrities Tommy Lasorda, Brooke Burke-Charvet and Denise Austin, as well as local bands and cheer teams, will root for the walkers. There will also be booths, activities, goodie bags and more.

“The walk is a fun and wonderful way to come out and enjoy the beautiful ocean views, get some exercise and participate with the Palos Verdes community toward a common goal of supporting our schools,” said Sala. “We love our schools, and we have a lot of community pride, so let’s show that to the whole South Bay.”

Skechers Pier to Pier Walk will be held on Sunday, Oct. 28 at 9 am at the Manhattan Beach Pier. To participate or to sign up as a virtual walker, log on to www.skechersfriendshipwalk.com. Click on “register,” then sign up on PEF or your school’s team and designate PEF as the group you want to support.

SKECHERS Announces Celebrity Hosts for Fourth Annual Pier to Pier Friendship Walk Presented by Nickelodeon

Tommy Lasorda, Brooke Burke-Charvet and Denise Austin support children with special needs and education

MANHATTAN BEACH, Calif.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--SKECHERS USA, Inc. (NYSE:SKX), a global leader in lifestyle product and innovator of performance footwear, today announced that legendary Hall of Fame baseball manager Tommy Lasorda, Dancing with the Stars co-host Brooke Burke-Charvet, and fitness expert Denise Austin will host the fourth annual SKECHERS Pier to Pier Friendship Walk on Sunday, October 28. Each celebrity shares a long history with SKECHERS; Lasorda – a loyal friend of the Company for many years – will appear in a new SKECHERS ad campaign later this fall, and both Burke-Charvet and Austin have supported the Company’s footwear collections as celebrity endorsees.
“When I participated in last year’s SKECHERS Pier to Pier Friendship Walk, it made such a dramatic impact on me that I was compelled to return this year and show my support”
SKECHERS is anticipating 10,000 participants at this year’s Pier to Pier Friendship Walk, which is presented by Nickelodeon, and will aim to surpass the $600,000 fundraising total from 2011. Since its 2009 launch, the walk has raised $1.2 million to help retain vital educational programs, maintain smaller class sizes, upgrade school technology, as well as support The Friendship Circle – a non-profit organization that assists children with special needs and their families through one-on-one peer mentoring and social programming (www.gotfriends.com).

“We are thrilled that Tommy, Brooke and Denise are hosting this year’s walk and devoting their time to help the SKECHERS Foundation raise awareness and funds for these important causes,” said SKECHERS president Michael Greenberg. “Schools rely on this additional funding to maintain valuable programs that are constantly threatened by budget cuts, and the Friendship Circle creates a life-changing environment that not only helps children with special needs, but also influences teen volunteers to become caring mentors who give back to the community. These children are the future of our nation, so it’s crucial that we step up and provide the financial support they need to succeed.”

“When I participated in last year’s SKECHERS Pier to Pier Friendship Walk, it made such a dramatic impact on me that I was compelled to return this year and show my support,” said Brooke Burke-Charvet. “These kids are truly inspiring, and watching them join together to save our schools and support children with special needs is such a great example for other communities across the country. I hope people recognize what SKECHERS has accomplished through the Pier to Pier Walk, and it compels them to show support for this important cause on a national level.”

Traveling from the Manhattan Beach Pier to Hermosa Beach Pier and back, the 3.4-mile walk will include performances from local school bands, cheerleading teams and free activities for the entire family:

    8 AM     Check-in and registration
Sponsor exhibitions and Kids Fun Zone activities
9 AM Opening Ceremony Celebration at Manhattan Beach Pier
10 AM Walk begins

The Pier to Pier Walk will also be followed by the 22nd annual World Famous Pumpkin Races at the Manhattan Beach Pier.

Individuals, families, team leaders and team members can register online at www.skechersfriendshipwalk.com or by mail for $25. Registration at the Manhattan Beach Pier on the morning of the event is $30. Registered participants will receive a commemorative SKECHERS Pier to Pier Friendship Walk t-shirt, goody bag and complimentary water and drinks along the walk route. For those who cannot participate, donations will also be accepted until the day of the walk; event sponsors and volunteers are also welcome to participate.

In addition to Nickelodeon, the SKECHERS Pier to Pier Friendship Walk thanks its sponsors True Religion, Wells Fargo, DIRECTV, WSS, Michael Stars, Kids Foot Locker, Ross, Body Glove, Marshalls, Murad, Chevron, Fresh Brothers, Union Bank, Equinox, Travel Store, Bobeli Screen Printing, Premier Displays and Exhibits, Viva International Group, Adjmi Apparel Group, Bel Air Investments, Dabsan International, O'Melveny & Myers, Diners Club International, Tashman, Mathnasium, United Legwear, Steel Excel and countless others who have provided funds and support to make a difference in children’s lives.
