Skechers Holds Charity Pier Walk

Women's Wear Daily

October 29, 2012

Skechers USA Inc. went the extra mile for children with special needs when the company held its fourth annual Pier to Pier Friendship Walk on Oct. 28, in Manhattan Beach, Calif.

More than 8,500 participants made the 3.4-mile trip from Manhattan Beach Pier to Hermosa Beach Pier, and back. The event raised more than $750,000 for The Friendship Circle, a nonprofit group that helps children with special needs find mentoring and social programs.

“What that organization does is pairs children with special needs with volunteers from middle schools and high schools and they become lifelong friends,” said Skechers President Michael Greenberg. “Children with special needs, a lot of them lack friends. The student volunteers become their friends and they meet every single week. It’s a beautiful thing to see a child with special needs having buddies who bring so much joy and happiness to their lives.”

The event was co-hosted by Hall of Fame baseball manager Tommy Lasorda, “Dancing With the Stars” co-host Brooke Burke-Charvet, and fitness expert Denise Austin.

Sunday’s Skechers Friendship Walk will raise much-needed funds for PV schools

Local News

By Carrie Yamato, Special to the News

With $3 million to raise this year, the Peninsula Education Foundation is counting on this weekend’s Skechers Pier to Pier Friendship Circle Walk to bring in significant dollars.

“This is probably one of the biggest checks we will get this year,” said PEF Executive Director Andrea Sala. “We’ve been involved in the walk since it started four years ago, and every year the amount we earn grows.”

Last year, more than 2,000 supporters participated in the 3.4-mile walk between Manhattan Beach Pier and Hermosa Beach Pier, and it brought it more than $88,000.

This year, team captain Sala hopes to get at least 3,000 walkers.

“We’ve always had the most walkers, so we’ve gotten the biggest check the last two years,” said Sala. “We want to win again!”

In addition to each walker’s $25 registration fee, PEF receives funds from the event based on the number of actual and virtual walkers it has on its team. The proceeds go directly to the school district to help maintain staff, small class sizes and special programs.

“We don’t know what the formula is [for distributing the funds], but if you do the math from last year, it’s a significant amount,” said Sala. “So if you can’t come out, be a virtual walker for us because we’ll get credit for that as well.”

While funds raised from the walk benefit education foundations in the South Bay from El Segundo to Palos Verdes including Torrance, the walk primarily secures money for the Friendship Circle, a South Bay nonprofit that brings social and recreational opportunities to special needs kids at schools and in the community. Regardless of what the education foundations earn, funds from the walk are specifically allocated to the Friendship Circle.

Danielle Lindgren, a junior at Palos Verdes High School and president of PVHS’s Friendship Circle, is hoping to increase proceeds by enlisting the help of walkers.

“I put posters around school, handed out brochures and just tried to share my story with people,” said Lindgren, who has been active with the Friendship Circle since she was in eighth grade.

Lindgren was even able to convince a few teachers to give students extra credit for walking.

“The teachers realize how important it is to raise money for our schools and the Friendship Circle program,” she said.

Lindgren is looking forward to hitting the Strand with some of her Friendship Circle friends.

“Last year, I walked with a couple of kids with special needs, and it was a lot of fun,” she said. “I don’t think of them as my friends with special needs. We just hang out and have fun. The little things that we take for granted excite them so much, and I love it.”

This year, celebrities Tommy Lasorda, Brooke Burke-Charvet and Denise Austin, as well as local bands and cheer teams, will root for the walkers. There will also be booths, activities, goodie bags and more.

“The walk is a fun and wonderful way to come out and enjoy the beautiful ocean views, get some exercise and participate with the Palos Verdes community toward a common goal of supporting our schools,” said Sala. “We love our schools, and we have a lot of community pride, so let’s show that to the whole South Bay.”

Skechers Pier to Pier Walk will be held on Sunday, Oct. 28 at 9 am at the Manhattan Beach Pier. To participate or to sign up as a virtual walker, log on to www.skechersfriendshipwalk.com. Click on “register,” then sign up on PEF or your school’s team and designate PEF as the group you want to support.

SKECHERS Announces Celebrity Hosts for Fourth Annual Pier to Pier Friendship Walk Presented by Nickelodeon

Tommy Lasorda, Brooke Burke-Charvet and Denise Austin support children with special needs and education

MANHATTAN BEACH, Calif.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--SKECHERS USA, Inc. (NYSE:SKX), a global leader in lifestyle product and innovator of performance footwear, today announced that legendary Hall of Fame baseball manager Tommy Lasorda, Dancing with the Stars co-host Brooke Burke-Charvet, and fitness expert Denise Austin will host the fourth annual SKECHERS Pier to Pier Friendship Walk on Sunday, October 28. Each celebrity shares a long history with SKECHERS; Lasorda – a loyal friend of the Company for many years – will appear in a new SKECHERS ad campaign later this fall, and both Burke-Charvet and Austin have supported the Company’s footwear collections as celebrity endorsees.
“When I participated in last year’s SKECHERS Pier to Pier Friendship Walk, it made such a dramatic impact on me that I was compelled to return this year and show my support”
SKECHERS is anticipating 10,000 participants at this year’s Pier to Pier Friendship Walk, which is presented by Nickelodeon, and will aim to surpass the $600,000 fundraising total from 2011. Since its 2009 launch, the walk has raised $1.2 million to help retain vital educational programs, maintain smaller class sizes, upgrade school technology, as well as support The Friendship Circle – a non-profit organization that assists children with special needs and their families through one-on-one peer mentoring and social programming (www.gotfriends.com).

“We are thrilled that Tommy, Brooke and Denise are hosting this year’s walk and devoting their time to help the SKECHERS Foundation raise awareness and funds for these important causes,” said SKECHERS president Michael Greenberg. “Schools rely on this additional funding to maintain valuable programs that are constantly threatened by budget cuts, and the Friendship Circle creates a life-changing environment that not only helps children with special needs, but also influences teen volunteers to become caring mentors who give back to the community. These children are the future of our nation, so it’s crucial that we step up and provide the financial support they need to succeed.”

“When I participated in last year’s SKECHERS Pier to Pier Friendship Walk, it made such a dramatic impact on me that I was compelled to return this year and show my support,” said Brooke Burke-Charvet. “These kids are truly inspiring, and watching them join together to save our schools and support children with special needs is such a great example for other communities across the country. I hope people recognize what SKECHERS has accomplished through the Pier to Pier Walk, and it compels them to show support for this important cause on a national level.”

Traveling from the Manhattan Beach Pier to Hermosa Beach Pier and back, the 3.4-mile walk will include performances from local school bands, cheerleading teams and free activities for the entire family:

•
    8 AM     Check-in and registration
Sponsor exhibitions and Kids Fun Zone activities
•
9 AM Opening Ceremony Celebration at Manhattan Beach Pier
•
10 AM Walk begins

The Pier to Pier Walk will also be followed by the 22nd annual World Famous Pumpkin Races at the Manhattan Beach Pier.

Individuals, families, team leaders and team members can register online at www.skechersfriendshipwalk.com or by mail for $25. Registration at the Manhattan Beach Pier on the morning of the event is $30. Registered participants will receive a commemorative SKECHERS Pier to Pier Friendship Walk t-shirt, goody bag and complimentary water and drinks along the walk route. For those who cannot participate, donations will also be accepted until the day of the walk; event sponsors and volunteers are also welcome to participate.

In addition to Nickelodeon, the SKECHERS Pier to Pier Friendship Walk thanks its sponsors True Religion, Wells Fargo, DIRECTV, WSS, Michael Stars, Kids Foot Locker, Ross, Body Glove, Marshalls, Murad, Chevron, Fresh Brothers, Union Bank, Equinox, Travel Store, Bobeli Screen Printing, Premier Displays and Exhibits, Viva International Group, Adjmi Apparel Group, Bel Air Investments, Dabsan International, O'Melveny & Myers, Diners Club International, Tashman, Mathnasium, United Legwear, Steel Excel and countless others who have provided funds and support to make a difference in children’s lives.

SKECHERS Wraps 'Shape-up America Tour' With New York City Finale

Coast-to-Coast Tour Allowed Thousands of Consumers to Experience the Shape-ups Phenomenon

MANHATTAN BEACH, Calif., Aug. 24 /PRNewswire-FirstCall/ -- SKECHERS USA, Inc. (NYSE: SKX), a leader in the toning footwear industry with 70% of the current market share, wrapped up a successful 20 city tour in New York City's Times Square. Cruising across the country from June through August, the Shape-up America Tour caps off a hugely successful year for the brand as it has become the gold standard of the toning industry since its launch in 2009.

The Shape-up America Tour gathered thousands of consumers and the finale in New York City was no exception.  Denise Austin, America's favorite fitness expert, hosted the festivities in Times Square which included exercise classes, games and a special presentation to Amelia Hunter of Charlotte, NC winner of the "My Shape-ups Story Contest".  Amelia was one of several contestants who shared her Shape-ups story at the "Taste of Chicago" and won a trip for two to the New York City finale, a Shape-ups wardrobe and a personal meet and greet with Denise Austin.

"I love my Shape-ups" says Amelia Hunter with delight.  "I bought 5 pairs.  I wear them all the time and I've lost 10 pounds and several inches – I'm a lot more firm."  She continued to share with the crowd at Times Square, "My friends call me the 'Shape-ups Pusher'. I've bought a pair for my daughter and two of my friends.  I'm addicted to them."

Designed with a soft kinetic wedge and dynamic rocker bottom to help improve posture, strengthen the back and tighten abdominal, buttock and calf muscles, the Shape-ups Original style helped launch the toning industry. The Company's 2010 Tour is designed to meet consumers' growing needs for its product: offering a newly expanded Shape-ups collection, fitness experts, multimedia support, and informational materials to give consumers the complete Shape-ups experience in their hometowns.

In addition to the hugely popular Shape-ups Original, the Tour introduced:
  • Shape-ups XT & Shape-ups XF: Extended Training for men and Extended Fitness for women are designed to transform routine activities into an all-day, low-intensity workout.
  • SRT: SKECHERS Radius Trainer is designed for a high-intensity workout with accelerated muscle activation.
  • Shape-ups AT: All Terrain for men and women provide support and protection for rugged excursions.
  • SRR – The Resistance Runner for men and women is designed to create the a more fluid stride that simulates a natural running state.

"Everyone wants to incorporate some type of fitness into their lives, but it often comes down to time and access," said Jennifer Weiderman, vice president and general manager of SKECHERS Fitness Group.  "Shape-ups solve that problem.  People can wear them wherever they go and for whatever activity they do and get a workout.  Shape-ups engage more muscles, make you work harder, and generate results. The Shape-up America Tour is a way of bringing Shape-ups to Americans across the country to let them experience these benefits for themselves."

The third annual Friendship Walk raises money for education and special needs—locals take part in the fun.

About 7,200 people laced up their shoes Sunday for the third annual Skechers Pier-to-Pier Friendship Walk. Participants walked from Manhattan Beach Pier to Hermosa Beach Pier and back to raise funds for local education foundations and the Friendship Circle, an organization for special needs children.

"We're making a difference, and it's really the support of the community coming out for a wonderful cause," Skechers President Michael Greenberg said.

In an email to students, staff and parents of Palos Verdes Peninsula High School, Principal Mitzi Cress said, "Yes, I’m sore, but the walk was great fun. It was a wonderful morning of camaraderie, celebration, sunshine and fundraising. What a delightful surprise to see our band and pep squad cheering us on at the halfway point. Peninsula High was well-represented, far surpassing our school’s goal for participation."

Bands and cheer squads from Mira Costa and Palos Verdes high schools energized the crowd. Celebrity ambassadors Brooke Burke, Denise Austin and Tommy Lasorda were also on hand lending support.

SKECHERS Pier to Pier Friendship Walk Breaks Records in Its Third Year

October 31, 2011 09:17 PM Eastern Daylight Time

Star-Studded Event Raises More than $520,000 for Education Foundations and Children with Special Needs

MANHATTAN BEACH, Calif.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--The SKECHERS Foundation today announced that more than $520,000 was raised for children with special needs and education through yesterday’s SKECHERS Pier to Pier Friendship Walk. The 20ll donations were significantly higher than last year’s Pier to Pier Walk’s total of $380,000 thanks to the record number of walkers, more than 7,000 people, and the many donations by local and national businesses, including presenting sponsor Kids Foot Locker.
“I believe that it is our obligation as parents and business leaders to provide assistance to wonderful organizations like The Friendship Circle, which touches the hearts of so many, and to help schools during these tough times.”
“Three years ago we had 2,200 people come out, and last year we had 3,800 walkers. I got an email at 1 a.m. this morning from a team leader saying that we were at 7,200 walkers. This is our biggest turnout yet,” Michael Greenberg, president of SKECHERS, told the crowd at the SKECHERS Pier to Pier Walk on Sunday. “But I want each one of you to tell a friend about this so next year, we can raise more money for children with special needs and our kids’ education.”

Greenberg later added: “I believe that it is our obligation as parents and business leaders to provide assistance to wonderful organizations like The Friendship Circle, which touches the hearts of so many, and to help schools during these tough times.”

Sunday’s event, which was a 3.4 mile walk from Manhattan Beach to Hermosa Beach and back, was hosted by fitness expert and SKECHERS ambassador Denise Austin, who rallied the crowd before the walk. Dancing with the Stars host and SKECHERS spokesperson Brooke Burke Charvet and legendary Hall of Fame baseball manager Tommy Lasorda also spoke to the crowd about the importance of education and fitness.

“I have four kids and as a mom, education is a high priority on my list,” Brooke Burke Charvet told the crowd. When I think about what’s happening (within the education system) and how all of you are giving back, through your efforts and your contributions and donations, and to come out here today, and walk and gather and spend time with the family and friends, it’s really incredible. You should all be proud of yourselves today for making such a difference.”

“This is a great country we live in,” Tommy Lasorda said from the Pier to Pier Walk stage. “We’re always able to help somebody in need and what you’re doing here today is helping. You ought to be congratulated for what you’ve done here, you should be proud, you should walk prouder this year then you did last year. Just remember one thing, to paraphrase the words of the great general Douglas MacArthur: ‘We shall return.’ I hope we get more people involved next year.”

In addition to presenter Kids Foot Locker, sponsors of the 2011 SKECHERS Pier to Pier Friendship Walk include Wells Fargo, Body Glove, Merrill Lynch, Chevron, Ross Stores, Marriott, Premier Displays & Exhibits, Marshalls, United Legwear, Waste Management, Equinox, Shape Magazine, Star Magazine, Union Bank, AT&T, Team One and Nestle, among others.
