PHIT America Announces First Celebrity Ambassadors

Hershel Walker & Bryan Brothers Headline Roster of a
World-Class Athletes Fighting the Inactivity Crisis

(Silver Spring, MD.) – PHIT America – the non-profit education and advocacy organization designed to combat the nation’s inactivity and obesity crisis – announces NFL great Hershel Walker, tennis legends Mike and Bob Bryan, fitness expert Denise Austin and Golf Channel instructor Michael Breed as its first celebrity ambassadors. 16 Celebrities have joined the PHIT America team to date and many more are expected to join soon.

Each of these PHIT America Celebrity Ambassadors were selected due to a common vision. Their collective goal is to create “A Movement for a Fit and Healthy America” by educating men, women and children about the importance of an active lifestyle to improve overall health.

Walker, a two-time Pro Bowl selection and 1982 Heisman Trophy recipient, attributes his success and lengthy career (14 NFL seasons) to an active and healthy lifestyle off the gridiron. He has even spread his message to Congressional leaders on Capitol Hill at “National Health Through Fitness Day,” held every March in Washington, D.C.

“I’m excited to represent PHIT America and carry out my lifelong mission of helping people become more active,” says Walker. “Almost 192 million Americans are not up to healthy standards and it’s our responsibility to get them moving in the right direction.”

Currently No.1 in ATP Doubles Ranking, the Bryan brothers hold 15 career Grand Slam tennis titles and 91 professional wins. Since turning pro in 1998, they have placed a significant focus on being active, even on days off from training.

Austin has dedicated more than 30 years to helping people lose weight through motivating advice and healthy recipes. She’s sold more than 24 million exercise videos and DVDs and authored 12 books on fitness.

Host of “The Golf Fix” on the Golf Channel and 2012 PGA National Teacher of the Year, Breed incorporates fitness activities into his instructional routines while encouraging students to walk while they play. For the average player, an 18-hole round roughly equates to a five-mile walk or four-mile run, resulting in up to 2,000 calories burned.

“Almost 30 percent of Americans are totally sedentary and this has increased the last five years,” says Jim Baugh, Founder of PHIT America, former President of Wilson Sporting Goods and a 2011 inductee into the Sporting Goods Industry Hall of Fame. “Inactivity is the prime contributor to the escalating health care costs we all face and our celebrities are helping create a more fit country, one person at a time.”

PHIT America supports two pieces of legislation crucial to increasing the number of healthy Americans. When passed, the Personal Health Investment Today Act (PHIT) will allow people to use pre-tax medical accounts for physical activity expenses. The Physical Education Program (PEP) is a 12-year Federal grant from the Department of Education for schools to rebuild health and fitness programs. Last week, PHIT America launched the Mayors Fitness Challenge, a new, fun 10 week fitness program for cities to help get their residents more active, fit and healthy.

Since its January 2013 launch, more than 130 leading companies and associations from the sports, fitness, retail and media industries have contributed funds and services to support PHIT America.

Americans are encouraged to support PHIT America by visiting PHITAmerica.org to advocate, provide a donation or participate in health and wellness programs.

About PHIT America

Founded in January 2013, PHIT America and its 130-plus sponsors are responding to the inactivity and obesity crisis by leading "A Movement for a Fit and Healthy America." PHIT America promotes grass-roots fitness and sports initiatives, including development of high-quality physical education (PE) programs in schools. Recent Physical Activity Council research shows children in PE are three to four times more likely to be active outside of school.

PHIT America also supports two vital pieces of legislation, which will increase the number of fit and healthy Americans:

• Personal Health Investment Today Act (PHIT) - When passed, Americans will be able to use pre-tax medical accounts for physical activity expenses.

• Physical Education Program (PEP) - A 12-year program supporting local physical education programs throughout America.

Both the PHIT Act and PEP Program will help mitigate rising health care costs by causing Americans to develop more active lifestyles.

Four Fall Fitness Routines

Today's Hindu article presents four fitness routines to keep you in shape during the fall. Ranging in order from easy to extreme, Power Pilate comes third mentioning Denise Austin's videos on the internet to be great for targeting specific areas on the body and helping customise routines.
Power Pilates

We’ve heard of power yoga — but Power Pilates? It’s a form of exercise that uses the routines and “moves” you learn and practise in your regular Pilates class to improve your posture. The workouts usually range from 50 to 65 minutes and aim at improving strength, muscular endurance and metabolism.

Interested in trying out this form of Pilates? The first option is to ask a Pilates instructor around town if he is familiar with this sort of routine and can teach you a few moves. If that doesn’t work out, then head to the Internet. Denise Austin, an American fitness instructor and famous author/columnist, has some great videos up, that target specific areas of your body, helping you customise your routine to your needs.

You Don't Need A Gym To Impact Your Health

Yesterday's Dallas Morning News Health Blog has an article by family physician Dr. Jane Sadler MD on five things doctors may not tell you that could have a direct effect on your health and/or your pocketbook. The first of five things she mentions is the need to exercise because it can lower the risk of heart disease and cancer. Sadler also writes that you don't have to join a gym and suggests exercise videos like Denise Austin's yoga tapes as being really great for beginners.
1.     You need to exercise. Oh, yes…you do.  I realize you can’t afford a monthly yoga class but Denise Austin has some really great beginner yoga tapes.  While the highly vigorous and physically complex P90X is not recommended for the average couch potato, many other exercise DVD options are available, you do not have to join a gym. If you prefer to walk, then WALK. Refer to my prior blog about lowering your exercise intensity. According to the American Heart Association, exercise can lower the risk for heart disease by up to 40%. There is a similar cancer reduction seen with moderate exercise. I always giggle when I hear patients repetitively tell me they have “just joined a gym” at their annual physical (what a timing coincidence).

Dr. Jane Sadler MD (August 13, 2013). "5 things doctors may not tell you". The Dallas Morning News. Retrieved August 14, 2013.
The New York Times ran a story earlier this month on how internet workout videos are giving people who are fitness-minded an alternative to gym memberships. The story goes on to mention that there is a growing popularity of fitness videos on YouTube, according to Kate Mason the YouTube spokeswoman.
YouTube, which is owned by Google, does not track the number of people viewing fitness channels, according to Kate Mason, a company spokeswoman. But she described it as “an incredibly popular segment” that appears to be growing. Between January 2008 and January of this year, the number of times “fitness” was used as a search term on YouTube doubled.

YouTubers are great fans of Denise Austin workout videos, and it's not only for the fitness benefits. Check out Dave McKenna's article on Denise's popularity on YouTube.

Wake Up and Go: Low impact aerobics and yoga

Danielle Knox saying she can't wait to see what Denise is wearing.

Low impact aerobics and yoga - YouTube
Uploaded on Jul 11, 2011 by TheBalancingAct

This morning Denise starts off with low impact aerobics then shows you some great yoga moves that stretch and tone the whole body.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QrWnAhHwi3w

Here is an interview of Denise Austin before her debut on The Balancing Act where someone from the South Florida Sun-Sentinel commented about how her outfits are more modest than before.
I saw a tape of you from about 20 years ago. Your workout outfits are cut more modestly now, as are a lot of other fitness professionals.

(Denise Austin) Yes, thank goodness. The big hair is also gone now. Hey, I was stylin,' baby.

Nick Sortal (January 1, 2011). "Q&A: Denise Austin talks about new fitness segments she's taping in Pompano: Fitness expert to appear daily on Lifetime Channel.". South Florida Sun-Sentinel. Retrieved August 3, 2013.

In 2006 she commented to Washington's Finest Magazine about how her outfits were "little" and "cute" while she had her own television shows.
“I was really scared because ESPN was mostly a ‘guys’ network, and I had to be in little outfits doing my exercise show on the beach. I had to go to them and tell them I was pregnant. I didn’t know what they would say. But, they were wonderful about it. And, my ratings went sky-high! I guess viewers wanted to see what I would look like, pregnant.”

[...]

Her dedication paid off. Denise was with ESPN for 10 years before switching to sister-station, Lifetime TV, the number-one cable network in the country. Each morning her shows attract a wide following. At 7:00 a.m., “Fit and Lite,” is filmed in serene settings — beautiful desert spas — and features yoga and Pilates moves. Immediately following, at 7:30 a.m. is “Denise Austin’s Daily Workout,” the longest running fitness show on television. It is a high-energy workout, filmed in exotic beach locations, and Denise notes, “wearing cute outfits.”

Natalie Bovis-Nelsen (2006). Fitness Diva, Denise Austin: More Than a Pretty Face. Washington's Finest Magazine. Retrieved August 3, 2013

Shane25, a YouTuber who has uploaded chopped up clips of Denise's old shows and tapes, told the Washington City Paper:

“Her exercising in those skimpy [clothes] can be a turn on. I know that might make me sound like a pervert or something but it’s the truth and most guys would agree.”

Dave McKenna (April 20, 2007). "Stretch Comedy: Exercise guru gets indecent exposure.". Washington City Paper. Retrieved October 16, 2014.

The first sentence in a 2003 USA Today article mentions that a lot a women would not wear the outfits Denise wore for her old shows and videos:

Fitness instructor and author Denise Austin's usual outfit for her show and videos is the kind of form-fitting attire many women avoid.

Mike Falcon and Stephen A. Shoop, M.D. (January 13, 2003). "Denise Austin attacks women's fitness problems". USA Today. Retrieved October 16, 2014.
